lake erie #10 – new image and a giveaway

20101118 portglasgow 037 blog lake erie #10 new image and a giveaway

Lake Erie #10, Landscape Photograph

I spotted this pile o’ rocks way back last summer when I was scouting out locations for upcoming seascape photographs. Oh how I miss summer! Darren and I first discovered Port Glasgow (where this photograph was made) when we took a mini road trip / scouting excursion along the north shore of Lake Erie from Port Stanley to Point Pelee. Such a lovely way to spend some hot lazy days in August. We jumped in the water at every public beach (and a few private ones) along the way. It was magical! I hope to do something equally as memorable this summer.

I’ve wanted to photograph these rocks ever since. You can imagine my surprise when the stars aligned (by stars I mean mother nature) and I was able to capture this image the same evening as Lake Erie #9! Two photographs in one evening! Imagine that! The beautiful light that glows throughout this scene is caused by the sun that has just set mere minutes ago and it doesn’t last long, sometimes twenty minutes, usually a lot less. Combine that short window of opportunity with the long exposures that I use and there isn’t much chance of creating two of these images in one night.

Lake Erie #9 and Lake Erie #10, Landscape Photograph Set

The lovely, muted purply-grays from Lake Erie #9 carried over into this photograph which is why I think they work so well together, don’t you think?

To kick off the launch of Lake Erie #10 we’re going to give one away! This time we’re going to include our Facebook fans in the giveaway too.

field trip – the burlington art centre art auction

20101118 portglasgow 032 vbbt1114 update field trip the burlington art centre art auction

Lake Erie #9, 11×14 inch landscape photograph framed to 16×20 inches

Friday night Darren and I piled in the car and made the two hour road trip to The Burlington Art Centre’s Art Auction where Lake Erie #9 was set to be auctioned off. And it was certainly a nerve-wracking affair. I’ve never faced one of my images being sold at a live auction, and let me tell you, I was anxious!

201102 032 field trip the burlington art centre art auction

{Me and Lake Erie #9, we were bid number 177}

I was lot number three so my time came quickly. I remember when they put it up on the auction block my heart started pounding in my throat and I whispered to Darren, “I’m gonna to need a drink after this”. I mean, what if it didn’t sell? What if it didn’t meet the meagre reserve price that I had set? It wasn’t really about the money, it was about my ego and my confidence. That, and I didn’t want to have to make a third trip back to Burlington to pick up my unsold art. That certainly would be the drive of shame and would take a ton of ice cream to heal.

Bids started flying. Then, before I knew it, it was all over. I stood frozen as the auctioneer announced “Sold for $450″, and Darren whispered in my ear “Do you need a drink?”, my response “Oh ya…”.

I think I was still in shock when I woke up on Saturday morning.

london’s handmade festival spring 2011 workshops

20100318 handmade 015 london’s handmade festival spring 2011 workshops

The spring 2011 lineup for London’s Handmade Festival Workshops has been announced! So exciting! Leia has organized lots of inspiring, free and almost free classes:

  • Winter Vegan Gluten Free Cooking
  • Tiffany Stained Glass
  • Needle Felting
  • Wet Felting
  • Beginner Sewing
  • DIY Worm Composting for the Urban Gardener
  • Beginner Quilting
  • From Seed to Salve

This is the second year and third round of Handmade Festival workshops, the first set of classes were held last spring at the Central Library, with a second session last fall at both the Library and the Practice Loft. The Handmade Festival is not-for-profit and began as a way to teach people to use their hands to create a sustainable living through art. In past generations sewing, quilting, darning, knitting, and canning were a part of everyday life, whereas now these skills have fallen by the wayside. These workshops offer people the opportunity to reconnect with these activities, bettering their lives because of it.

The best part is that these workshops are open to anyone, for the most part once you’ve registered you just need to show up – no special tools or materials required, everything you need will be provided.

20100331 handmade 083 london’s handmade festival spring 2011 workshops

Isn’t it great?! With each iteration the Handmade Festival is getting a little bit bigger. I’m thinking about signing up for the sewing and quilting workshops. I’ve recently committed to making a small patchwork duvet cover so this is great timing!

Last spring I was the official Handmade Festival photographer so I got to sit in on some really fun classes: quilting, felting, canning, and fired glass pendant making. It’s such a great feeling to see a bunch of strangers of all ages, from all walks of life, get together and learn a new, valuable skill. And the pride they took in their finished pieces, amazing!

If you’ d like more workshop details and registration information hop on over to the Handmade Festival Blog. And as Leia says, “love your hands”.

the colours of 2011

20101118 portglasgow 032 dreamy the colours of 2011

{Benjamin Moore’s Dreamy shown with Lake Erie #9}

It’s the time of year for the paint companies to release their forecast colours for 2011, and this year there are some very interesting and beautiful selections.

Benjamin Moore has put together their annual Envision Color collection, eighteen of their favourites for the coming year. Their palette is divided into three collections: Dreamy, Spirited, and Soulful.

benjaminmoore dreamy the colours of 2011

{Genesis White, Kendall Charcoal, Gray Mirage, Porcelain, Etiquette, Smoke}

Dreamy (above and top) – for use with translucent and sheer materials, blurred decorative details, and softened textures

benjaminmoore spirited the colours of 2011

{Storm, Lucerne, Royal Flush, Paper Mache, Wrought Iron, Grape Green, shown with Grandview Lake #1}

Spirited – for use in fashion and furnishings as geometric shapes, stripes, and dynamic colours that are balanced by lots of black, white, and grey.

kettlepoint 010 soulful the colours of 2011

{Hush, Vintage Wine, Etruscan, Casco Bay, Wasabi, Amulet, shown with Kettle Point #1}

Soulful – use in pattern on pattern and hand-worked decoration such as beading and embroidery. Benjamin Moore’s colour of the year is Vintage Wine from this collection.

{Pantone’s Honeysuckle shown with Lake Erie #5, Moonrise}

And the big one that everyone is talking about is Pantone’s Honeysuckle. Choosing a shade of pink for a room can be difficult, which is why I’m so glad Honeysuckle is the colour of the year, goodbye bubble gum and baby pink, hello reddish-pink. You are my honey, honeysuckle, I am the bee!

So what do you do with all these colours? It’s definitely a good place to start if you’re thinking about redecorating a space. You can also try to work them into your wardrobe choices. Personally, I like to incorporate them into my images and dip into them when designing our downloadable desktop calendars, business cards, and other pieces. I may even update our logo colours.

Which are your favourites? What do you plan to use them for?

{Colours may not be exactly as shown due to web compression and monitor profiles.}

all i want for christmas…

holiday shipping schedule 1 week left all i want for christmas...

{Stocking Stuffers: Elviage Pearl 5×7 inch photograph, Vanilla Dream framable notecard set, 2011 Art Calendar}

That’s right! There’s only one week left to place your order within Canada and the USA and receive standard shipping by December 24th. Outside of Canada and the USA? Then you have a week left to place your Xpresspost order – contact us for more information on how to do so.

At our house Christmas is filled with handmade {usually edible} gifts, those are my favourite kind you know. But if we were to do things definitely this year, here’s some things I’d wish for:

Hmm.. Let’s dream a little bigger..

  • a night at the ice hotel where I’d sit in the hot tub under the stars
  • which I’ll need to help wind down after my trip to Italy
  • with a stop over in Greece
  • and Iceland
  • where I made lots of photographs with my new camera
  • oh, and seeing as we’re dreaming big, I also dream to one day make a very comfortable living from my online art shop.

What do you dream for?
