How to Choose Throw Pillows for your Sofa

As I looked around our living room I realized that our couch is looking sad. Don’t get me wrong, it’s in great shape with nice, simple, clean lines, but it’s longing for a pop of colour by way of pillows. Our winter set just isn’t cutting it. The covers don’t quite fit right and they’re not adding enough fresh, happy style. They’re more of the this-will-work-for-now variety because I don’t have a clue about how to choose throw pillows for the sofa. So I looked around online, asked questions, and now I want to share with you my favourite tips:

4 Tips to Choose Throw Pillows

1. Start with one pillow you love and build from there. Use it for style and colour inspiration.

2. Choose just one or two colours and pair them with neutrals like white, grey, or beige.

3. For easy matching choose covers by the same designer or store. It’s no guarantee, but artists will often use complimentary colours across their products for a nice cohesive look. So if you’re shopping on Etsy it might be a good idea to stick with just one seller, and if you’re still not sure send them a message to see if they can offer suggestions.

4. Use different sizes for interest and comfort. At our house I like to have a large throw pillow in each corner with a slightly smaller one in front of it (and a slightly smaller one in front of that if there’s room), that way the pretty patterns aren’t completely hidden and sofa-sitters can customize the arrangement for maximum relaxation.

I know I mentioned Etsy earlier, but my current favourite place to shop for throw pillows is Society6 – it’s like Etsy but they focus on printing art, artists upload their work and can choose to have it made into prints, iPhone cases, throw pillows, and more. Here’s a few of my current favourites to get you started. Enjoy!
