Fine art prints are ready to ship in 5-10 business days.

I’d recently made a new friend. Julie. She was a sports photographer that loved to get out in nature, so I invited her to come photograph the 6am sunrise over Lake Erie one August morning in Port Glasgow.

To my surprise, she actually showed up at my house, in the wee hours of the morning, gear in hand, ready to head for the beach. We drove an hour in the dark, fingers crossed the whole way for a pretty sunrise even though the sky was laden with heavy clouds.

There was a nervous excitement in the car. Like riding a roller coaster approaching the crest of the first hill, we were on the edge of our seats – and it was exhilarating!

We were still in the getting to know each other phase, and had a lot of fun telling stories about our lives, past and present, and laughing so hard I almost missed the turn off.

Descending down to the lake, a quiet filled the car. We held our breaths, and silently begged for some colour among those grey clouds.

Description

We walked the wooden footbridge over the creek, through the trees to the clearing of the beach.

Still cloudy.

My heart sank. I was worried it was going to rain on our parade.

According to my watch the sun was about to come up. I felt pressured to make an amazing image to impress my new photographer friend. I’d invited her to come photograph on the beach, and when we arrived it was grey and there wasn’t a wave in sight. I felt like such an amateur.

As the sun approached the horizon, a tiny sliver of pink appeared just above the water. That was all we were going to get that morning.

So how could I take those lemons and make lemonade? See the silver lining? The beauty?

Think. Think. Think.

Now was the time to go abstract. Minimal. Play with the colour and most of all create a piece that expressed the swift, lighthearted happiness we’d felt on our drive that morning.

This piece will forever embody Julie for me. Her ease, her warmth, her joy, and the way she inspired me that cloudy morning on the beach.

And I hope it makes you feel those things too.

Beautiful soothing photographs to enjoy all year. Printed on slightly pearlescent card and with a simple wooden block to display them, I’m looking forward to beautiful art year round.
