I was in the studio experimenting with photographing flowers through a piece of frosted glass. My initial images were stunning, so once I’d created the piece I’d envisioned, I wanted to try something different.

I rotated the bouquet. Nope. That wasn’t quite it. How about a little more? No.

I squinted.

Changed angles. But I still couldn’t quite make out what I was looking for.

Ain’t that the truth.

I’d been feeling directionless. Like I don’t know where I’m going or what I want. I can almost make out the next step, but what good is that if it’s heading the wrong way?

My default is to try harder, do more. It rarely works. But in the moment it’s all I can think to do. Heaven forbid I loosen my grip and get creative.

I rotated the vase a bit in the other direction. I moved my camera oh-so slightly. That’s when the light came shining through. The focus softened. The energy a little livelier and optimistic.

I just needed to give it space. That’s what I need to do now. Spend some time just sitting and thinking.

This is my favourite piece from my A Future Unclear collection. I love the softness. Shockingly, I like the asymmetry. The emerging light draws me in to explore. Shows me the future is bright and beautiful. I just need to stop a minute.
